These are my thoughts on the game....If anyone cares. lol. The jitters were obviously there in the first half, but there were tons more positives than negatives. When looking at last year's exhibition game, I noticed that we played better this time. We shot a higher %, higher FT %, more rebounds, steals, and less turnovers. We flat out played better than last year. Also a tidbit, we had double the amount of people attending the game than last year. Thats a good sign. How good was blackburn? Not good at all, but there was one guy that seemed to not miss while even being guarded. Did they want to win? Yes, but it was obvious they lost steam. I was very happy with Forrester. He played all recruits equal in some sense. Eveyone got their fair share of time.
Now for the early reviews:
Kris Davis: I was wrong about this guy. Flat out wrong! Kris told me that I was wrong and now a look like a donkey. I don't know if you guys say it, but he played like a combination of Aamir and Chatt. He can shoot. Give him time. I could see him as a top scorer on the team. Aggressive and fast as hell. Played very smooth and confident. Great guard who can rebound look at his rebounding stats (thats big). Will only get better!! My question is...would you rather play him as a sg or pg? I think he would work as either, but I would like for him to play Chatt's role. Dish it to him and let it fly. There is obviously no clear pg on the team. Forrester is messing with combinations.
Mike Birts: I can say I will not let this one game determine my thoughts on him. He rebounded well for how long he played. Could be a weapon, once he buys a little more into the system.
Jerome Jones: STUD. We will do fine with him. That guy on Blackburn completely tried to flop on him. Pissed me off sooo much. I like that he shoots the 3 ball well. not a lot of guys will guard him closely on the 3.
Shaffer: Total upgrade on Bundalow. Bundalow was slow and unathletic. The only thing going for Bundalow was that he had a nice touch on his shot (baby hook). Shaffer is more aggressive and responds better to coach's thoughts. He will get better and be a driving force done low. Did I say I that he is pretty atletic for a big guy? He will play well in the ovc. A lot of the teams have short, but athletic centers.
Joy: Give this guys a a game or two. He will come around. He seemed to be a little frustrated. Has a veryyyyy good jumper. Hes gonna be hard to guard. Great size and decent speed for his frame. Watch this guy. He's gonna be a sleeper.
Wickware: Coach, from my perspective, wanted him to do very little in the game. He was most likely in there only to distribute and set the tempo. He will get back to his level. Remember Wickware started out weaker than how he ended. There will be nothing but aggression and 3's in his future.
Stineman: Im actually going to complement him. He seemed poised and decent at point. Let him shoot coach. He can make them!
Boarden: Really the only bad player/or bad day on the team. He will need to step it up to stay relevant. The whole team could pass him up.
Reed: decent speed and driving ability. One BIGGGGGG problem he dribbles with only one hand most of the time. Big teams will exploit that. I see him most likely back to the bench after exhibitions. Glad that the guy got some points. Hes most likely a hard worker.
VERY bright future for SIUe. I wish that Zeke and Messer could have played, but Ill take it. Zeke needs to see some decent playing time next game. I don't see why Messer wouldn't play. He needs to get a couple of games in before IL. It couldn't hurt him. The jitters on this team, for the most part, are out. We should play at a very high level this season.
